Arrive into the City of Gold — Johannesburg — and spend the night in Sandton before making your way into the heart of Venda. Here you will be privy to one of the most authentic cultural experiences in South Africa. Spend two days at with the Venda people around Lake Fundudzi and immerse yourself in tribal cultural and experience their spiritual connection to the environment around them.

After reconnecting with the soul of the land, venture into Kruger National Park where you will embark on an authentic safari through the untamed Timbavati. Your wildlife experience moves into 5th gear at the prized Sabi Sand part of the Kruger where it is not uncommon to see all of the Big 5 on one game drive.

Head to KwaZulu-Natal’s pristine coastline along the warm Indian Ocean. Stop at the UNESCO Isimangaliso Wetlands and explore the marine biodiversity of this incredible area at Thonga where you can indulge in snorkelling, scuba diving and a marine safari in Maputaland.

After all that nature, some city life will go down nicely. Board a short flight to Cape Town and spend 3 nights in the city centre exploring the culture and history (as well as the foodie spots) on foot and with local guides. Let the last two weeks settle in at Sterrekopje Farm which is a soulful sanctuary of healing rest, creativity and play. It’s also located in the heart of the winelands, Franschhoek!

FULL ITINERARY

DAY 01 — JOHANNESBURG / CITY

 

Welcome to South Africa. Upon arrival, you will be met by your driver who will transfer you into the vibey district of Sandton in Johannesburg. Overnight at Athol Place Hotel before you begin your cultural immersion in Venda.

DAYS 02 & 03 — VENDA DISTRICT / CULTURE

 

Nestled at the foot of the Luaname Mountains, Fundudzi is a traditional camp in the heart of Venda territory. Explore the sacred places as well as Venda arts and crafts. It is most renowned for their immersive cultural tours which explores the myth and legend around Lake Fundudzi and the Thate Vondo Forest. One of the highlights is witnessing the Makwarani dance group who make the Dombo dance come to life in the form of a writhing python of traditionally-clad women.

DAYS 04 & 05 — TIMBAVATI GAME RESERVE / SAFARI

 

It’s safari time! Meander down into the Greater Kruger National Park and check in at Ngala Tented Camp within the Timbavati. Spend 3 nights in this private wilderness that is teaming with wildlife. Embark on twice daily game drives with expert guides and in authentic open safari vehicles.

DAYS 06 & 07 — SABI SAND GAME RESERVE / SAFARI

 

Travel down into the heart of the Kruger — the Sabi Sand Game Reserve where you will spend the next 2 nights at the tranquil and soulful Dulini Lodge. Enjoy twice daily game drives and just take a step back and reconnect with nature, there isn’t a better place to do so in the Kruger National Park.

DAYS 08 TO 10 — MAPUTALAND / OCEAN

 

Continue down towards the warm Indian Ocean in Maputaland. Here you will spend 3 nights at Thonga Beach Lodge where you can indulge in scuba diving, snorkelling, turtle safaris (in-season), whale watching (in-season) as well as a range of other water based and land based activities at this sustainable, community-based lodge.

DAYS 11 TO 13 — CAPE TOWN / CITY

 

Board your local flight from Durban to the Mothercity, Cape Town. Hit the ground running once you check in at Derwent House which has a great central location. Over the next 3 nights explore the Cape Peninsula, the foodie culture and history as well as an art tour of the city with local guides.

DAYS 14 & 15 — WINELANDS / FOOD

 

Cradled in the foothills of the Franschhoek mountains lies Sterrekopje, a regenerative farm and soulful sanctuary of healing rest, creativity and play. Spend 2 soulful nights at Sterrekopje Farm while dropping into a handpicked wine estates to taste the blood of the gods.

DAY 16 — CAPE TOWN AIRPORT / FLIGHT

 

It’s your final morning in South Africa. Enjoy a slow morning in the winelands before heading to Cape Town International Airport from where you can continue on your travels.
