Comrades Marathon Tours & South Africa Travel

Come for the race. Stay for the adventure. Travel before it, too.

Nature & Psyche helps South African and international runners, partners, families and supporters build a holiday around Comrades. From gentle pre-race stays to post-race safaris, mountains, culture and the KwaZulu-Natal coast, we shape the journey around your dates, interests and pace.

Plan your marathon journey

Tell us your race, travel dates and how long you have in South Africa.

Before Comrades: explore at your pace

Give your South African holiday room to breathe before race weekend. A relaxed KwaZulu-Natal stay can bring together mountain views, local culture and time in nature, with space for your own preparation.

Ask about a gentle Drakensberg stay or a vehicle-based safari in Hluhluwe-iMfolozi, Phinda or Manyoni. We can discuss shorter outings around Durban and experiences for companions while you rest. Allow for transfer times and early game drives; keep demanding hikes and busy travel days away from the days immediately before the race.

Partners, families & supporters

Your travelling companions deserve a holiday of their own. Tell us who is coming, children’s ages and everyone’s interests. We can plan shared experiences and separate outings while the runner prepares or recovers, including private arrangements for friends and running groups.

Build a wider South African holiday

Arrive → explore gently → race → rest → safari or tour → fly home. This is a flexible planning sequence, not a fixed departure.

Our 14-day Mountains, Wildlife & Cape Town journey and KwaZulu-Natal and Lesotho overland journey offer ideas for a longer trip. Ask us to adapt the active elements, add your race-week stay and allow time for recovery. You can also continue towards the Garden Route.

After Comrades: safari, mountains & coast

The finish line can be the start of the next chapter. Choose a Big 5 safari, a quiet mountain stay, Sani Pass and Lesotho, or time beside the Indian Ocean. The options below are starting points for a tailor-made extension; nights, activities and transfers are agreed around your available time and preferred pace.

Elephants with calves beside a sandy riverbed

Big 5 safari after Comrades

Swap race-day crowds for wildlife viewing from a safari vehicle. Explore Hluhluwe-iMfolozi, Phinda or Manyoni, with lodge downtime between drives. Sightings are never guaranteed.

Grassy valley beneath the Drakensberg Amphitheatre

Drakensberg mountain escape

Make space for mountain views, quiet mornings and San rock art. A Drakensberg extension can be paced around rest; walks and hikes are optional and should match your energy and mobility.

Winding Sani Pass road through green mountain slopes

Sani Pass & Lesotho

Travel by 4x4 through mountain scenery and make time for Basotho culture. This is a longer, bumpy outing at altitude rather than a rest day; discuss timing, border documents and conditions before adding it to your trip.

Sea turtle swimming above a coral reef

Elephant Coast & Indian Ocean

Slow down beside the sea and explore the iSimangaliso wetlands. Ask about beach stays and gentle nature outings. Ocean activities and wildlife encounters depend on season, conditions and your chosen stay.

Comrades travel FAQs

How many days before Comrades should I arrive?

There is no single arrival window for every runner. Tell us your flight plans, race commitments and preferred settling-in time so we can place any touring before your preparation days. Check registration and race-pack deadlines with the organiser.

Can I go on safari before Comrades?

Yes, a vehicle-based safari can form part of a pre-race holiday. Allow for transfers, early starts and downtime, and choose dates that fit your own preparation.

How soon after Comrades can I start a tour?

We plan the departure around your recovery needs rather than a fixed next-day start. Tell us about stairs, walking or long drives you would prefer to avoid; active outings can be left out.

Can my family or supporters join?

Yes. Partners, families, friends and supporters can travel together, with separate experiences while the runner rests. Share children’s ages and everyone’s interests when enquiring.

Can I book private travel or a longer South Africa holiday?

Yes. Ask for a tailor-made journey combining KwaZulu-Natal with Cape Town, the Garden Route or another region. We will agree the route, nights, activity level and transport in your quotation.
